The Shooting Star Flower

Home > Scenic Wonders Blog > The Shooting Star Flower

The Shooting Star is a wonderful wildflower because of its unique shape and multiple colors. Its blossoms usually have four or five petals which are a royal pink with a bight yellow base and a maroon stripe circling the protruding stamen.

Dodecatheon jeffreyi is found in wet places from June through August, in elevations from 2,300’ feet to 10,000 feet. Dodecatheon means 12 gods…for it was believed 12 greek gods took care of this plant!

The flowers are usually nodding on slender pedicels…the small stalk bearing an individual flower. ORIGIN late 17th cent.: from modern Latin pedicellus ‘small foot,’ diminutive of pes, ped- ‘foot.’

We greet the shooting star with a nod as we walk lightly without a heavy foot. In the early morning glow, a few dew drops remain. In Yosemite each fresh day is a gift of beauty. This shooting star helps us to spend this day in the spirit of joy. This small flower gives us a vision as wide as the horizon. Its smiling face gives us a glimpse of something bigger than ourselves.

The shooting star speaks of overflowing love. I hope the photograph speaks eloquently of divine love. This moment of love is a most welcomed gift.
